Let’s start with the very beginning….
The Journey2 of Instagram
The influence of Instagram on wider audience has led it as one of the unique element and an essential marketing strategy of social media marketing.
Instagram, one of the most valuable social media platform that any business can take advantage of has more than 700 million monthly active users, 400 million daily active users, 250 million Instagram stories users and over 80 million posts every day. The social media platform is getting even more impactful day by day with its new feature ‘Instagram stories’.
Here’s a breakdown of how Instagram made it reach 700 million monthly users –
October 6, 2010: Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger launched4 Instagram.
April 9, 2012: Facebook bought Instagram for approximately $1 Billion.
February 26, 2013: Instagram joins 100 million users club. In this year, Time Magazine listed Instagram as one of the top 50 apps for Android.
March 25, 2014: With an increase in 23% active users in 6 months, Global Web Index stated that Instagram is the fastest growing social network with 200 million users on it.
August 02, 2016: Instagram launched “Instagram Stories”. A new feature that allows you to share all the moments of your day in the form of a 10-second slideshow (this feature is similar to Snapchat’s 24-hour story sharing feature). Since the introduction of this feature, there are almost 250 million users who use it on a daily basis. With the launch of this feature, it hardly took much time to hit more than 500 million user base.
December 15, 2016: The photo-sharing app estimated to have a global mobile ad revenue5 of $1.53 billion. The International Business Times stated that the revenue amounted to about 8.4% of Facebook’s global mobile ad revenue. The engagement level is also high with at least one hashtag added in the post, that 12.6% more.
April 26, 2017: The platform finally hit the target to reach 700 million users base within 9 months.
There is no doubt that Instagram has seen a whopping success crossing millions of users, since its launch.

Influence Of Instagram
The influence6 of this very vast social networking site is manifest in all sectors to communicate and build relationships with the ample number of users. It has more than 700 million users, much bigger figure than many social sites but the point that needs consideration from the marketing view is, how one can accelerate their business using this platform. Will the platform give them immense opportunities to attract and hold prospects for a longer time span?
Although, the way our business go on this medium broadly depends upon our marketing strategies which I’ll discuss precisely in coming chapters but before that we need to have a look at its influence on the general public as well as on celebrities.
To get an answer to these type of questions, marketers and brand organizers often do survey or research to compute the influence of Instagram regarding timing, sections, nature, and mode of sales made at several demographics.
Here is an infographic based on a survey done on 2000 people by Dana Rebecca Designs to demonstrate the influence of Instagram on fashion decisions. View
Consumers in today’s world are making their purchase decision based on the recent trend suggestions and what they see on various blogs, Facebook, Instagram and other online platforms. The positive side of this change is that companies are accepting and adopting the change in their businesses. This has led the Brands and Retailers to build better relationships with Influencers to gain more attention from the consumers.
A study made in 2015 stated that by 2017 Instagram’s global mobile ad revenues were expected to close in on nearly $3 billion.
The worldwide mobile internet advertising Ad Revenue7 statistic of 2017 revealed that Instagram did a business of $3.64 billion. The social network also projected to reach the $6.84 billion, in 2018. This figure is more than Facebook revenues.
Instagram is letting people explore the world including the inaccessible8 places where social media sites like Facebook and Twitter are banned. Unlike many other social media, Instagram accounts create more education than creating controversies, more conviction than humor.
Instagram is expanding our viewpoints as we look for perpetually photogenic areas, while travel brands are appointing prominent Instagram photographers as a major aspect of their marketing approach.
Chapter 2.What Is Instagram Marketing?
Ever since its launch in the year 2010, Instagram has emerged as a marketing channel for sellers and buyers of several industries including Culture, Food, Fame, Tradition, Activism, Fashion and more.
Who would have thought that a simple photo sharing app will become more adventurous with what we eat, what we wear, what we do and everything in just 7 years?
Maybe,… The marketers!
Yes, that’s why instead of giving you a pale introduction to Instagram marketing, I tried to give you a glance on its scopes so that you get this very idea that for being a successful marketer you need to be a foreseer.
The more you develop the ability to predict outcomes, the closer you are to succeed.
Instagram Marketing is a bit dissimilar when compared with other social site’s marketing. Started as a photo-sharing application, the network has now evolved into a photo, GIF and video sharing app. It has also added new features like ‘Instagram Stories’ where you can upload a 60 sec live video, reality stickers and face filters, lately on the network which I will discuss in later chapters.

Step 1. Select Your Niche
First and foremost, you should know what you are up to? You must be wondering why? but have you heard, it is easier to know others, but it is equally tough to know yourself.
You too might have decided to start an apparel’s, pizza, cosmetic, liquor, books, food or jewelry brand, but how can you be confident about your ideas. Wait, I am not talking about post-launch success. I am talking about your abilities, access to resources, mobility and other factors which need to be considered while selecting your niche.
Suppose you decided to launch a startup business of apparel then you must have a facility to manufacture clothing from raw materials or unstitched clothes, designers, distributors etc. or if you want to start a small business, first learn to tailor and then you may go ahead with local customers.
There is no limit to the opportunities, but how far you go with that depends upon your comprehension with your niche.
Step 2. Understand And Analyze Your Niche
You analyzed your resources and on the basis of it, have selected your niche. Good! Now it’s time to make plans according to the current status of the product prevailing in the market. This step includes market research to gauge your competitor’s reach, pricing, servings and how they are running their business. This will improvise your future plans.

Profile Picture: It is one of the first few things others would see when they search or visit your account. It should be, therefore, consistent with your niche. For example, if you are an influencer or fashionista, you can put a good selfie of yours or if you are a baron, put your brand logo as a profile picture.
Username: Your username is the name of your account that appears along with the profile picture when others see or search your account. It addresses your profile when others visit at www.instagram.com/[yourusername] to view your profile.
Bio: This comes beneath the username in your Instagram profile. Here, you can write a description about yourself. Intelligently fused with bio’s about your brand, both in a concise manner, it should be limited to 150-characters only.
Tips:– Don’t overuse emojis and phrases. It might trigger your brand and you.
Bear in mind, whoever visits your account looks for these 3 crucial things
- Who are you?
- What do you deliver?
- Why she/he should follow your account?
Therefore, having a sound profile optimized with professional and compressed data about you would be a great way to satisfy your viewers at first glance and persuade them to look for more into your account.
Step 5. Upload Visuals related to your Brand
Once everything is done, start posting images, videos or everything that Instagram allows on your account to make viewers know about your brand.
Moreover, I will talk about what more or less stuffs you can add or remove from your content (both text and visual) to make it enticing to the users. In later chapters, I will also discuss on how your content can be SEO friendly using hashtags.
Benefits and Limitations of Instagram Marketing
Since the launch of Instagram in 2010, what lead to the fundamental benefits and problems of Instagram for Business? Even after Instagram announced its new tools for business, there are several issues that need to be solved before considering the tools a legitimate source of information for avid Instagram users.
Few strong benefits of switching your brand’s account to a business account:

However, the promotional activity can be done on the original or the post that already exists. Create the post and click the “Promote” button below the image. Ensure that you also create your target audience and budget before you send. This procedure is similar to boosting a Facebook Ad.
For example, Ashley Wilking10, a New York-based health specialist, utilizes online networking deliberately for the marketing purpose. Incorporating the products of a New York-based startup, Indie Fresh, that she uses every day, Ashley regularly promotes the Indie Fresh products and offers a 10 percent off rebate to her 5,000 followers on Instagram. With this, the organization can undoubtedly check on the sales quantity that they get from Wilking. Therefore, Wilking gets herself some products for a discounted price.
Are your strategies right? If not, a great opportunity can turn out to be a disadvantage in a fraction of a second.
But what is stopping you in marketing from Instagram? Let’s have a look at what the limitations or the disadvantages are of Instagram.
- Limited Desktop Feature: Instagram is an app basically created for Android and iPhone users. While you can use your Instagram account on desktop, the access is very limited. Through desktop, the promotional activities of a brand don’t work as Instagram only allows to do mobile advertisements. In short, the desktop feature is not as user-friendly as your smartphone.
- Copyright Issues: For professional photographers, this platform is quite risky. While Facebook is using Instagram to generate revenue, this made the photographers reconsider on how they can utilize the photo-sharing app. In a business platform, photographs of a product can be re-posted or use it for various other gatherings without seeking any authorization.
- Being Organic or Inorganically Social: As marketers, given a choice, what would you prefer to get better search results? Organic or Paid? Last year, Facebook introduced Algorithms for Instagram. This mostly helped the bigger brands which could afford to spend for more visibility on Instagram. This is a drawback for SME’s or brands who couldn’t afford to spend with a minimal budget.
While Instagram clearly offers both advantages and disadvantages to the client, it is, in any case, an intense promoting device that ought to be considered in any effective marketing effort. Should one wish to explore, there is no damage at adjusting a modest bunch of pictures and gaging any reactions from your target audience.
What Can You Do?
Brands who are still lagging behind in adopting new marketing strategies need to try and start adapting to the changed landscape. While Instagram provides a branding power, it will never be an old-fashioned strategy for any of the users
However, the 24-hour stories in Instagram that are similar to Snapchat allow brands to create engaging ways to interact with their clients. In addition, only your followers will be notified about the story that you have posted. However, this new feature is an open gateway for Instagram to empower brands to promote their stories to a focused timeline later on.
Still, in the early stage, Instagram is going to bring in more features and a lot of changes that can and will happen. However, with the introduction of the new social tools in the market, it will turn out to be progressively more challenging to have an effect as a brand without spending some batter.
