Instagram Posts includes photos and videos that we upload on Instagram and this uploading sometimes also called posting. Thus, a post is both verb and noun that Insta counts on. Posting relevant posts is the key that holds users on our accounts or better I say, it is the only means to communicate with your users on Insta. Via your posts, you can share your sentiments, ask questions, give opinions, organize contests and much more. They are the bread of your account and in this chapter, we will discover tricks and tips to butter it as much as possible.
Visuals have better impacts on our brains as in comparisons with textual contents. Our brain responds 50% faster to visuals. From this, you can infer that we are more sensitive to images and videos than text-only data. Till 2016, 91.07% of Instagram contents includes photos and on average images experiences 650% higher traffic than textual.
The logic behind this is, 81 % of readers only glid an online content and our brain set preconceptions about a content in a mere 50 milliseconds and since our brain responds to visuals 50% faster, 40% users respond better to visuals. No matter whether we are reading textual or visuals, 90% information transferred to the brain in forms of visuals.
lots of statistics, I know!! but these stats will help you to understand the abstract of this chapter.

Chapter 7. How to Optimise Your Insta Posts?
How To intensify your post’s reach to get colossal followers?
The easiest funda is, entertain them. The toughest query is, How?
Your posts by and large hold the sole responsibility to exert influence on people. That’s why here I shall discuss various ways to increase your posts reach.
Every brand uses some basic tactics to grow their followers but to get more people amassed at your brand page we need to infuse certain intellectual tips along with the basic ones. Come, let’s give a dive to these points!
# 1. Type of Posts.
Instagram posts are broadly classified on the basis of industries to which they belong. Apart from the industries, they are also categorized on the basis of contents used in them.
On the basis of industry, some industries reap more followers than others, with fashion industry receiving the most number of likes and comments, followed by beauty bloggers.
On a second note, there are other different genres of posts that draw more ‘likes’ irrespective of their niche.
*Consumer Generated Media : The term is widely known as User Generated Contents (UGC). As the name indicates, ‘UGC3’ refers to those contents that are generated by end users who are followers of the brand. These contents like general posts are published publicly on the brand account.
This has been a surefire method to promote campaigns and other activities on your Instagram business profiles. Many top brands are leveraging UGC to connect more with their users. You can either ask your users to posts their pictures and tag your brand or they themselves post it on their account as feedbacks.
Look at the likes one of the posts from Frank body, a coffee scrub brand got, through user-generated contents, in fact, the most of the images on this brand Insta account are user-generated. Seems that they have inherited the skill very well.
In a survey done by Crowdtap & Social Media Advertising Consortium
on 839 people belonging to age group of 18-36 in 2014 January, it is found that
- UGC is 50% more trusted media than others.
- 68% peers trust user-generated contents while only 64% peers trust on professional contents.
- 40-55 % millennials say their purchase decisions get impact by UGC.
- UGC contents are 35% more memorable than other contents from other sources.
The simplest reason for extravagant influences of User Generated Contents is, people get more influenced when they get suggestions from their peers, families or common users.
Note: Don’t get confused in User-Generated and User-specific Contents. Both are the ways to boost engagement on your posts, but former is generated by users whereas later is posted by brands giving higher priority to the taste of users.
*Behind the Scenes Visuals: From the above description on UGCs, you might have understood that users prefer raw contents means, those images that look real and authenticated. Another way to boost engagement on your posts is to upload ‘behind the scenes’ images that show how a particular product is made or who are the makers of your products(employees). This too, will bring you closer to your prospects and boost trustworthiness of your brand.
Remember, always posts ‘behind the scenes’ images in a manner that they look casual and definitely not look scripted.
Look down at a video posted on Accenture Instagram account, showing how their employee is enjoying a weekend.
# 2. Post at right time
What is the right time to post your photos and videos on Insta or Is there any such best time for posting?
Answering this question would be a little difficult for you! If we look at Statistics given by many organizations to find out the best time to post on Instagram, we get a lot of answers, but the problem is, all of them are different.
Let’s see what various researchers say the best time to post on Insta.
- According to a poll done by ‘Later’, formerly Latergramme: the ‘best time to post on Instagram4’ is between 7-9 p.m & 11 a.m-1 p.m and the best day is Wednesday & Thursday. According to them on these timings and days, our posts get more engagements and are more likely to reach users. Because these are generally the free or recess timings and users check Instagram most at this time.
- In another poll done by ‘Cosmopolitan’, the best time to post on Instagram is found between 6-7.30 p.m during weekdays and 11 am on the weekends. Their conclusion was also based on the same notion that most people use the app during these timings.
- In an infographic published by ‘Hubspot’ in 2016, it declared that the best day to upload images and videos on Insta is Monday and Thursday. According to them, we can post at any time except 3-4 p.m on these two days. However, video post does better when posted at midnight, before 8 a.m.
Their research was based on the information collected from various sources.
4.whereas in an image posted at Bufferapp blog, they said the best day to post on Insta is, Thursday.
And in another image posted at a blog of trueconversion.com, they depicted the best time to post is 02:00 am and 05:00 pm and worst time are 09:00 am and 06:00 pm.
On the basis of different findings of various organisations, we can say there isn’t any certain time slot to post on Insta to get more engagements, nevertheless, we have seen more people engaged at evening & afternoon and Monday & Thursday. Still, there is no assurance, these time slots or days will work for your niche as well.
To find out the best time slot and day for your business, you need to understand why we get more or fewer users at various slots and to delve out Instagram Insights.
Let’s first see how many potential users a definite time slot can possess:
Morning Time: This timing cover time span between 7-9 a.m and is considered as a good time to post. This is because the usual thing people do nowadays just after waking up is, check their phone. Thus if your post pops up in their feed, chances are great that they will see it.
9-11 a.m: This could be one of the time slots to get least engagements. As these are times in which people are usually traveling to the office or have just in at their workplace.
11a.m – 2 p.m: This timing is again a good timing to post. These midday hours are the lunch hours and people tend to check social sites while this.
Evening Hours: This includes 5-6.30 p.m time slot which is again tea-break time. Same reasons, you know.
9 p.m till midnight: This is the time when most people are back to home or are done with their whole day jobs. They are mostly relaxed during this time and pay more eyes to posts being posted throughout the day.
Having apprehensive ideas of these time slots is good and will work better if you post your contents at the favourable time but they too vary according to the demography and nature of your targeted users. For example, if your intended users are school going children them morning time slot is not good for you (they might not carry cell phones in schools ;)).
Points to be Nurtured:– Since Insta runs primarily on mobile( a thing people carry 24*7 with themselves) so, there is great flexibility in every time slot to do wonders for your posts.
You need to be a little experimental in planning your posting schedule, in the beginning, to gauge which time slot is going well with your business and earning more likes and comments on your posts. Once you discover your right time to post, continue posting useful and relevant visuals at that time.
You can do this by using an automated service or by manually. If you have just started or are running 1-2 accounts with thousands of followers then you can go ahead doing all this by yourself but if you are an established brand with tens of thousands of followers, I will suggest you opt any efficient tool, which will help you in saving a lot of your time and efforts.
In continuation with what stated above, I will further suggest few more advantages of posting at a right yet peculiar time.
- This will generate a signature timing for your brand means your followers will keep waiting for your next posts at that time. This in itself is a successful marketing strategy.
- Posting at a definite time will create trust among your followers and will help you communicate with them better.
# 3.post enticing contents.
Though posting at right time is needed but what you are posting is equally mandatory. Your images and videos should be posted in a manner that it gives something useful to them to think on (like, comment or BUY).
They must be enticing cum emphasising, How?
Add fun elements to your posts.
Though they are advertising but ain’t you enjoying?
Just like Oreo, you too can add creativity to your pictures to give it a humorous turn. This will influence more users to make a purchase with your brand. At least it will persuade them to be on your Instagram professional account for longer.
I know business is a serious thing but that doesn’t imply, whatever you do should look or feel very serious!
Integrate your image with what’s trending outside.
Look at the post of the beverage company, Fanta, which was uploaded last year before Christmas celebrations. Though it was winter time and most people don’t prefer cold drinks, still, the post scores good numbers of likes.
No matter what business you’re in, link it with what trending outside, it’s obvious that the beverage company had not changed anything inside, what was changed, is only the outlook.
Likewise, you can also embed your images and videos with what’s buzzing outside, on your business account to attract more prospects.
Be an Informer rather a Meformer.
Post images that give some kind of information to them. Remember no one wants to waste their time on social media but people are so much addicted to it, they simply can’t keep themselves away from social networking sites. In this scenario, if you are giving them an informative content integrated with your brand logo or motives, they will be consoled better. It satisfies them, they are not losing time instead they are gaining knowledge.
For Instance look at the picture that California almonds posted on their Instagram profile. The image not just promotes almonds but also gives plenty of information about almond trees.
Almond trees actually grow 3 crops: a hull, a shell and kernel. To get to the delicious and nutritious #Almond kernels inside, the whole package goes through a huller to remove the hull and any debris. The hull is then sold as dairy feed. This reduces the amount of water used to grow other feed crops. Learn more about almond sustainability by clicking the link in our bio. #AlmondHarvest #happyharvest #HowWeHarvest
Give picture credits to photographers and tag people who are in pictures. Doing this, your posts will appear in their feed hence, it will reach to more followers including yours and theirs as well.
Chapter 8. Hashtags: A Potion To Your Instagram Account.
Ever wondered, how this hashtags thing is originated and gained popularity?
The use of number/pound sign as hashtags has been implementing in ‘Information Technology5’ for years. It is putted before a string to highlight a special meaning. In programming languages like c, c++, we use hashtags before statements to make its comments. Comments are sentences that not indulged in coding, they are putted to make the statement understandable.
In social media, we use hashtags to emphasize a word or phrase that includes letters, numbers or emoticons, that could state much more than just a word, for an example,#becrueltyfree.
Since your concern here is Instagram Marketing, I will talk about how to write and use hashtags to publicize your business on the medium.
What Hashtags do on Instagram?
Just like any other social media, on Insta too, hashtags are used to highlight a special word within the posted content( images or videos).
It is also used to categorize your contents on Hashtags page on the basis of hashtags used in your contents.
It increases brand visibility via contents popularity. Whenever any user clicks on a hashtag within any contents, all the posts that have used it in their posts and are public will appear on the hashtag page.
In this way, you are more likely to get seen by new users and they might also start following your brand. Thus Hashtags on Instagram are used to provide supplemental exposure to the brand.
How & where to add hashtags to your posts?
You can add hashtags in caption or comment section of your posts. They can be added to both new and already posted posts.
To add hashtags to new posts:
- Click a photo using phone’s camera or select a photo from the gallery.
- Add a filter, geotag (if you wish) then write the string(containing text, numbers, and emoticons) followed by ‘#’ sign.
- Click on ‘OK’ icon at the top of the screen.
- Select SHARE
To add hashtags to an already uploaded post, Edit the caption by clicking on the three dots at the right corner of the screen. Once you finish editing, tap ‘Done’ icon.
Insta Rules to Use Hashtags.
- In a post you can integrate up to 30 hashtags. Sufficiently enough, I guess!
- You can add hashtags to your posts only, you cannot tags other’s images or videos.
- Special Characters like $, &… are not allowed. However, you can use numbers and emojis in hashtags.
- If your Instagram profile is Private, your posts won’t appear on Hashtags private page, nevertheless, they will be visible to your followers.
- Practising popular yet irrelevant hashtags for longer could flag your account as spammers.
How To Use Hashtags for Business Brand On Insta?
Though hashtags have the potential to become your sword in a worldwide cold war of business over online platforms, it could be even more hazardous to you if not used properly. Just like any other weapon, this too required shrewd implementation of it, to get its maximum use.
While opting for hashtags in your posts,
- Search hashtags which are being used by your contemporaries.
- ‘As per the study6’ conducted in 2014, posts containing at least 1 hashtag get 12.6% more engagements than those who don’t. That’s why 88% brands include at least one hashtags in their posts.
- Make sure to use popular and relevant hashtags.
- Keep hashtags density to minimum 4-5 and maximum 8-10 in your posts as 91% posts belonging to top brands have 7 or lesser hashtags.
- Once, you have your brand well seated on Instagram, you can also be used hashtags specific to the brand name. For example, if your brand name is Pastastios, you can use #pastaloveatpastastios while launching your campaign.
